Overview: Comfort Cases is seeking a qualified intern to work closely with the Executive Director on the organization’s fundraising and development efforts. The position will be part-time or full-time and is unpaid. Academic credit can be arranged. The internship spans a range of responsibilities in development including managing and cultivating relationships with donors, maintaining records, contributing to research projects, and coordinating with volunteers. The intern position will be focused on assisting the Executive Director on the implementation of the organization’s fundraising and development plan. 

About Us: Comfort Cases’ mission is to inspire communities to bring dignity and hope to youth in foster care. Comfort Cases provides critical support to children entering the foster care system. Comfort Cases provides a backpack or duffel bag filled with new comfort and essential items that youth can keep and call their own. The cases have pajamas, a soft blanket, toiletry kit, dental hygiene kit, a book, an activity, and a stuffed animal. We seek to provide these essential personal items so that youth entering foster care have a sense of dignity, hope, and comfort during a time of crisis. Since 2013, Comfort Cases has impacted the lives of over 40,000 youth entering foster care in 39 states plus DC and Puerto Rico. Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assisting in general donor stewardship
  • Conducting prospect research on individual, foundation, and corporate donors
  • Assisting staff with communications with current and prospective donors including drafting fundraising emails and day-to-day communications
  • Supporting creation and dissemination of Comfort Cases’ annual appeal
  • Assisting with annual application and year round tracking of workplace giving campaigns (e.g., Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) and similar campaigns)
  • Assisting staff with grant application writing and tracking
  • Supporting staff with logistics associated with special events (i.e. Annual Gala), including assisting with creation of invitation list, all logistics, soliciting sponsors, communicating with venue and vendors
  • Tracking and evaluating all development efforts
  • Maintaining donor and grant databases and files, including calendaring deadlines, logging donations, generating and sending donor acknowledgements, logging donor appreciation efforts

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Be responsible, flexible, hard‐working, ethical, and committed to the mission of Comfort Cases
  • Possess a high level of organizational skills and be detail oriented
  • Possess solid oral and written communication skills
  • Strong research skills
  • Be able to juggle multiple tasks
  • Experience working with databases a plus, with Neon or similar CRM experience preferred
  • Be skilled at a variety of computer skills, e.g., Google for Nonprofits, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Adobe Acrobat; knowledge of InDesign and Photoshop a plus

Hours/Time Commitment: During the academic year, minimum of 15 hours per week preferred; minimum 3 month commitment, with 6 months desirable. During the summer, minimum of 30 hours per week preferred.

Time Period: Mid-September to Mid-December, Mid-January to Mid-May, and/or Late May/Early June to Mid-August.

Compensation: This is an unpaid position. There is opportunity for school credit if allowed by the college/university of applicant. Position offers an excellent opportunity to work on substantive projects and can result in a great reference.

Communications & Marketing Internship Job Description (Unpaid)

Overview: Comfort Cases is seeking a qualified intern to work closely with the Executive Director on the organization’s communications and marketing efforts. The position will be part-time or full-time and is unpaid. Academic credit can be arranged. This internship is an excellent opportunity to experience various aspects of marketing and communications while working for a well-known community based nonprofit organization. The intern position will be focused on assisting the Executive Director with the development and implementation of a strategic communications plan.

  • Assist with social media calendar, brainstorm ideas for new and innovative campaigns
  • Research and recommend social media channels to use/discontinue
  • Draft, edit, and post content to social media channels
  • Assist in planning, writing and managing monthly eNewsletter
  • Assist in planning, writing and managing mailed quarterly donor and supporter newsletter
  • Draft, distribute and pitch news releases, media alerts and other stories
  • Designing flyers, graphics, e-vites and other marketing material for major events hosted by Comfort Cases
  • Update the Comfort Cases website when needed
  • Collaborating with staff on new ideas, directions, and venues for marketing and communications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to communicate in a professional manner with press and community contacts
  • Be able to juggle multiple tasks, ability to prioritize and meet deadlines
  • Firm grasp of available tools and platforms in the social media space
  • Previous internship or related experience in marketing or communications is a plus
  • Be skilled at a variety of computer skills, e.g., Google for Nonprofits, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Adobe Acrobat; knowledge of InDesign and Photoshop a plus; knowledge of Squarespace, HTML and graphic design a plus
